Energy from the sun controls the Earth's weather and climate. The Earth absorbs some of the energy it gets from the sun and gives it back to space. However, certain gases in the atmosphere, called greenhouse gases, absorb some of the energy the Earth is giving back and traps it in the atmosphere. The major greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from humans are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases. Some of these gases are made almost completely by human activities; others come from both natural sources and human activities. The greenhouse gases can remain in the atmosphere for hundreds of years after being released. As greenhouse gases from human activities increase, they warm the climate more, which leads to many other changes around the world, in the atmosphere, on land, and in the oceans. These changes have both positive and negative effects on people, plants, and animals.

Greenhouse gases are hand in hand with global warming. Global warming is dangerous because it is melting ice caps and increasing the temperature where people and animals live. High temperatures can cause humans and animals to leave their currents homes for find something more suitable. All moving and building can cause a disturbance to others. Things that could happen from global warming are...
